INTRODUCTION

Hereby, BENTEL SECURITY declares that the ABS-GSM Module is in compliance with the essential requirements and other relevant provisions of Directive 1999/5/EC. The complete R&TTE Declaration of Conformity for each Device can be found at www.bentelsecurity.com/dc.html.

Installation of these systems must be carried out in compliance with the local laws and bylaws in force. This Communicator is fixed and shall be installed by Service Persons only (service person is defined as a person having the appropriate technical training and experience necessary to be aware of hazards to which that person may be exposed in performing a task and of measures to minimize the risks to that person or other persons). It shall be installed and used within an environment that provides the pollution degree max 2, over voltages category II, in non-hazardous, indoor locations only. This manual shall be used with the Installation Manual of the alarm control panel. All instructions specified within that manual must be observed.

These devices have been designed and made to the highest standards of quality and performance. The manufacturer recommends that the installed system should be completely tested at least once a month. BENTEL SECURITY srl shall not be responsible for damage arising from improper installation or maintenance by unauthorized personnel. BENTEL SECURITY srl reserves the right to change the technical specifications of this product without prior notice.

These instructions describe how to install the ABS-GSM GSM module. For device settings and information on how to use the module's functions, as well as any other information, please consult the ABSOLUTA Installer Manual and User Manual. The ABSOLUTA Manuals may be obtained from your distributor and downloaded from the www.bentelsecurity.com website.

Description

ABS-GSM is a GSM module that can be used by the ABSOLUTA control panel as a backup alarm communicator in the event of a failure or sabotage of the integrated PSTN alarm communicator, or completely replace it in areas covered by the GSM network but where PSTN is not available. In that sense, the GSM module is completely transparent to the control panel for: transmitting Voice Messages via GSM; transmitting events with Contact ID via GSM;

Functions

The GSM module can also be used to: send text messages to a series of phone numbers to report events (alarms, sabotage, failures, etc.); activate/deactivate the control panel actions (outputs, voice messages, etc.) by sending an SMS to the GSM module phone number; trigger actions simply by recognising the number calling the GSM module (free of charge); check the status of the control panel via telephone, by sending and receiving SMS; perform Teleservice (management and remote programming of the control panel) via the Internet, on the GPRS channel.

INSTALLATION

General Precautions

Before installing the GSM module, make sure the control panel is NOT connected to the power supply. Before inserting or removing the SIM card, make sure that the GSM module is NOT connected to the power supply. Disable the PIN and call transfer on the SIM card before inserting it into the GSM module.

Module Installation

The ABS-GSM GSM module can be installed in the metal ABS-M box and in the ABS-P plastic one, as shown respectively in Figures 3a and 3b (part no. 23) and described below.

Steps:

  1. Insert the SIM card (NOT included) into the SIM-holder 14 of the Module.
  2. Insert the GSM module to the connector 21 (GSM/GPRS), making sure that the holes in the angular brackets 13 on the Module coincide with the holes 19 on the motherboard.

WARNING: The GSM Module may be severely damaged if not properly inserted.

  1. Secure the GSM module to the holes 19, using the screws provided.

Antenna Installation

Metal Box

To install in the metal ABS-M box you need antenna BGSM-100CA (Figure 2b).

Steps for Metal Box Antenna:

  1. Position antenna BGSM-100CA on the upper side of the metal box, as far as possible from the wall.
  2. Pass the antenna cable through hole 18 in the bottom of the control panel, then connect it to connector 5 on the GSM module.
  3. Secure the antenna cable to the fastener 17.

Plastic Box

To install in the plastic ABS-P container, you need antenna ABS-AK (Figure 2c).

Steps for Plastic Box Antenna:

  1. Remove nut 7 and washer 8 from connector 9 of the cable 10 supplied with antenna ABS-AK.
  2. Insert connector 9 into hole 25 of the ABS-P container.
  3. Insert washer 8 and tighten nut 7 until connector 9 is fastened.
  4. Screw antenna 6 onto connector 9.
  5. Screw connector 11 onto connector 5 of the Module.

GSM Signal Strength Check and Programming

Check that the GSM signal strength is sufficient in the place where the control panel is to be installed (see the BOSS Status page or the GREEN light on the Module); if is NOT strong enough, try moving the antenna onto the metal container or the control panel, or else try the outdoor antenna ANT-EU. Program the options for the GSM module as described in the ABSOLUTA Installation Manual.

Operating lights

The GSM module has two operating lights (part no. 2 in Figure 2 on page 8) that light up to show troubles and the GSM signal strength, as described below. When the module is turned on, both lights turn on for an instant, indicating that the module is on.

RED (T) light

The RED (T) light is normally off; it flashes at a frequency of 1 s (0.5 s on/0.5 s off) to indicate that there is a trouble, as described below: between each sequence there is a pause lasting 2 s.

Trouble Priority

If there is more than one trouble at any one time, the light indicates the one with higher priority. The first column on this page indicates the priority of the trouble (1 corresponds to the highest priority) and the number of flashes (priority/flashes).

  • 1/1 Invalid Firmware: The GSM module requires a valid firmware.
  • 2/2 Power Trouble: The supply voltage powering the module is below the minimum required value.
  • 3/3 Radio Module Trouble: The microprocessor cannot communicate with the Radio Module.
  • 4/4 SIM Trouble: The microprocessor cannot communicate with the SIM card or is unable to unlock the SIM card PIN.
  • 5/5 GSM Network Trouble: The Radio Module cannot connect to the GSM network.
  • 6/6 GPRS Trouble: The GSM module cannot connect to the GPRS network (e.g. the APN settings may be invalid).
  • 7/7 Receiver not available: The GSM module is unable to complete the initialization procedure with an IP receiver over the GPRS network.
  • 8/8 Receiver 1 absent: Supervision with receiver 1 fails.

GREEN (S) light

The GREEN (S) light indicates the strength of the GSM signal, as described below.

  • Off: No signal.
  • Flashing slowly: Low signal.
  • Flashing rapidly: Good signal.
  • On: Excellent signal.
